The series is partially set in our modern world (circa the 1990s) and partially in a medieval fantasy-themed immersive virtual reality gaming environment where the players use magic to interact with their world, and this story features an attempt by the gaming world’s corrupted AI to wreak havoc on players in the real world.

The Dreamland Chronicles by William Mark Simmons is an omnibus edition of the Dreamlands series of science fiction & fantasy hybrid virtual reality adventures, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture Press imprint.

These were originally published in 1990, 1992, and 2002 by Warner’s Questar imprint and now-defunct sfnal specialty publisher Meisha Merlin, credited as by Wm. Mark Simmons. The series combines science fiction & fantasy elements in a high-tech future where people inhabit an immersive magic-wielding traditional fantasy-based virtual reality gaming world.

This omnibus edition contains all 3 novels, of which the 1st, In the Net of Dreams, was nominated for both the Locus and Compton Crook Awards. The stories were written to be self-contained adventures which explore various facets of the virtual world, which eventually comes under threat from various forces, as players begin to encounter alternate versions of their avatars under sinister circumstances and must unravel mysterious happenings.

The series is partially set in our modern world (circa the 1990s) and partially in a medieval fantasy-themed immersive virtual reality gaming environment where the players use magic to interact with their world. This story wraps up the series with a final adventure for the protagonist, who finds his consciousness swapped into the avatar body of a strange woman within an altered version of the game setting and hopping through parallels alternates of the created universe as he races against time before an external tragedy threatens to end the game.
