Ganesh by the late Malcolm Bosse, an American novelist praised for his depictions of Asian culture and history and a recipient of Germany’s Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis recognizing outstanding works of children’s literature, is a vintage standalone young adult literary coming of age novel, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press.
This was originally published in 1982 by Chatto & Windhus and was later reprinted under the title Ordinary Magic, and was the novel which won the author the 1983 Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in the “youth book” category.
The story takes place in India and the US, starring the India-born teenaged son of expat American missionaries who is thoroughly acclimatized to local ways, experiencing culture clash when he must adapt to “foreign” life as circumstances force him to start over with his aunt in the Midwest, drawing upon the Hindu traditions of his old friends from the village for strength and inspiration in the attempt to make new friends in town and when the future of his new home comes under threat.
