[Free eBook REPEAT] Frontier Legion by Sydney J. Bounds [Vintage Science Fiction]

Frontier Legion by the late British author Sydney J. Bounds, edited by Philip Harbottle, is a collection of his shorter science fiction works, free again for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

The titular novella was originally published in 1952 as a serial in Authentic Science Fiction Magazine, and eight other stories from points throughout his decades-long career (which eventually culminated in the British Fantasy Awards creating the Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer) are included as a bonus.

The main story is a old school pulpy sci-fi adventure thriller starring an amnesiac man who wakes up on a spaceship with an important mission to fulfill and enemies in his way, and many of the other stories also explore themes of human relations with space and aliens and technology.

[Free eBook] The Best of Sydney J. Bounds: Volumes 1 & 2 [Vintage Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, & Mystery]

The Best of Sydney J. Bounds: Volume 1: The Strange Portrait and Other Stories & Volume 2: The Wayward Ship and Other Stories by the late English author Sydney J. Bounds, edited by British editor Philip Harbottle, are reprint collections of his short stories across various genres (mostly SFnal), free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

These volumes were originally published in 2003 by Wildside Press’s Cosmos Books imprint and have been expanded with even more material in Venture’s new editions. The late Bounds was a prolific multi-genre author, who wrote pulp westerns and crime thrillers pseudonymously from the 1940s onwards, as well as fantasy, science fiction, and horror under his own name. The British Fantasy Awards’ “Sydney J. Bounds Best Newcomer Award” for promising debut novels is named in his honour.

These collections are primarily focused on showcasing his classic science fiction and fantasy work, but also include selected mystery and horror tales from throughout his decades-long career, which editor Harbottle gives an overview of in his introductory essays.

[Free eBook] Skeleton Pass by John Russell Fearn [Western]

Skeleton Pass by the late British author John Russell Fearn is a vintage standalone western historical action adventure novel, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Pioneering Press imprint.

This was originally published in 1950 by Scion, and was later reprinted by Robert Hale as part of their Black Horse Western line using the pseudonym Max Elton, apparently revised by British author Philip Harbottle, who has co-written a number of posthumous tales based on Fearn’s work.

The story features a treasure hunt starring an adventurous young woman and a group of companions embarking on a quest to find her father’s long-lost cache of gold, which outlaws also happen to be after.

This was originally published in 2002 by Robert Hale’s Black Horse Western imprint. This story involves a cattle dealer investigating the possible instigator behind a mob’s burning of a local family’s ranch, apparently in retaliation for the mysterious disappearance of a missing man, but with potentially darker and greedier motivations behind it.

The Doom that Came to Dunwich: Selected Stories of Lovecraftian Mystery by Richard A. Lupoff, a recipient of a 1963 Hugo for a co-edited fanzine and acknowledged expert on the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, is a themed collection of his sfnal mystery/horror shorts, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This collection contains stories in homage to the works of the late H. P. Lovecraft, especially involving his popular Cthulhu Mythos, with a new introduction to author Lupoff and his works by fellow science fiction author Philip Harbottle.

The title story was originally published as a bonus in a previous collection of the author’s in 1996 and later picked up for inclusion in the Return to Lovecraft anthology, and the others were printed in various magazines and anthologies over the decades, from the 1960s to the 2010s.

Private Satellite by the late English author John Burke, a prolific pseudonymous multi-genre author and early science fiction fandom member, & edited by British author Philip Harbottle, is a collection of his vintage golden age science fiction stories, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

These were originally published during the 1950s in magazines such as Authentic Science Fiction Monthly where the title story appeared in 1955 as a serialized novel. Some of the stories were originally credited under the variant names of Jonathan Burke and J. F. Burke.

The seven stories in this collection, apparently often feature a psychological thriller theme of exploring unsettling future versions of humanity.

This collection contains three novellas, apparently with themes of exploring strange new changed worlds both on future Earth and in space, reprinted for the first time in decades with a brief new introduction about the author and his works.

The stories were originally published in assorted magazines under the following pseudonyms: as Mark Denholm, “Waters of Eternity” from 1953 in Worlds of the Universe, and as Thornton Ayre, “World Without Women” from 1939 in Amazing Stories and “The World in Wilderness” from 1941 in Science Fiction.

The Man Who Sold the Earth by the late British author John Russell Fearn, edited by British author Philip Harbottle, is a collection of his vintage science fiction short stories, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

These were mostly originally published during the 1940s in various genre magazines, but a few are posthumous collaborations by other authors with his estate, which appeared from the 1970s onwards.

This collection has a new introduction by editor Harbottle, and contains seven stories which mostly explore themes of space or dimensional travel.
