Warwyck’s Wife by Rosalind Laker, a pseudonym for the late British author Barbara Ovstedal, an historical novelist whose American editor was former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is the 1st novel in the Warwyck Trilogy series of f/m family saga historical romance, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press.

This was originally published in 1979 by Eyre Methuen under the title Warwyck’s Choice. The series (also known as the Easthampton Trilogy) is set in a small village in the English countryside and follows successive generations of a local family, spanning from the Regency to the Victorian Era.

This installment takes place during the Georgian Era, as inheritance issues between the two orphaned Warwyck brothers leads one to “buy” a wife at a bride auction in Brighton in order to gain the ancestral manor, then plan to discard her in favour of an aristocratic woman he longs for, who can further his ambitions to turn the village into a fashionable resort.

The story is set in the English countryside during the Regency, starring a highwayman’s daughter fostered out to a farm in a rural area which rapidly grows over the years into an elegant resort town, and following her adventures as she rises from becoming a household maid to a lady of fashion against this changing backdrop and chooses between three suitors who will influence her destiny.

[Free eBook] The Smile of the Stranger by Joan Aiken [Regency Gothic Romance]

The Smile of the Stranger by the late British author Joan Aiken, best known as an award-winning supernatural fantasy author who was awarded an MBE for her contributions to children’s literature, is the 1st novel in the Paget Family Saga series of f/m Regency historical romance with Gothic suspense elements, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Sourcebooks’ Casablanca imprint.

This was originally published in 1978 by Doubleday, and this reprint is based on the later Warner paperback edition. The series is apparently a hybrid of Regency romance and Gothic suspense, starring various members of a family either encountering or escaping danger even as they uncover various truths of the heart.

This one focuses on the Continent-crossing adventures of an expat Englishwoman fleeing her home in Italy, fending off unwanted advances before reaching the relative safety of her first Season in London, which may turn out to be the most dangerous situation of them all.
