The story revolves around an early attempt to set up the Pony Express historical mail delivery service, as a Senator tries to entrust both his mission and his niece to a dubious character with a sinister secret.

This is a standalone story set in New Mexico, featuring the conflict between the local Pueblo Native American people and some unscrupulous treasure hunters, upon whom the tribal leader, a woman kidnapped from settlers and raised among the Puebloans since girlhood, seeks to take revenge as punishment for their undermining the stability of the tribe with forbidden alcohol, even as her ambitious rival plots with the outlaws to take her position.
