This was originally published in 1951 by John Spencer under the Rex Marlowe pseudonym.

The story stars a San Francisco P.I. who is hired to find a woman’s missing daughter, who has gotten involved with a dangerously unsavoury man who frames her for murder, in return for which she seeks not justice, but revenge, even as the P.I. tries to keep them both alive while figuring out exactly why the “killer” and victim were both targeted by the culprit.

Frontier Legion by the late British author Sydney J. Bounds, edited by Philip Harbottle, is a collection of his shorter science fiction works, free again for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

The titular novella was originally published in 1952 as a serial in Authentic Science Fiction Magazine, and eight other stories from points throughout his decades-long career (which eventually culminated in the British Fantasy Awards creating the Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer) are included as a bonus.

The main story is a old school pulpy sci-fi adventure thriller starring an amnesiac man who wakes up on a spaceship with an important mission to fulfill and enemies in his way, and many of the other stories also explore themes of human relations with space and aliens and technology.

The story stars an ex-lawbreaker from New York who is recruited by famous real-life historical detective Allan Pinkerton to break up two rival gangs terrorizing a town in the Southwest, while townsfolk distrust him, someone is out for revenge, and just to amke things more fun, he has to infiltrate both gangs in order to bring them down from within.

The story involves strong mystery elements, starring an ex-New York cop who changes profession to become a dentist in a mining town the Wild West, and comes across a supposed haunting keeping the town empty, while someone seems to be suspiciously buying up property, both of which lead his ex-cop instincts to investigate.

The story has a touch of espionage mystery in it, starring a man on an undercover mission to Mars, where the colonists seem to have nefarious plans to attack Earth, of which his attempts to investigate lead him to a strange and terrible case.
