This one continues from the new POV of the heroine, now appointed as headmistress to a workhouse through the scheming of her family’s creditor, who has an unsavoury personal interest in her, as she strives to improve the lot of the impoverished children living under the harsh conditions imposed by its unscrupulous owners, also patrons of her family’s former doctor, who had his own glimpse of the dark secrets they would prefer to conceal.
