Secret of the Cannon by the late English author Gordon Landsborough, a prolific and pioneering multi-genre pulp fiction writer and publisher, is a self-contained novel in the Careless O’Connor series of western historical action adventure, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Frontier imprint.

This was originally published in 1954 by Robert Hale under the title O’Connor Rides In using the pseudonym Mike M’Cracken and was later reprinted as part of their Black Horse Western line. The series consists of self-contained adventures starring Careless O’Connor, a Texan employed as a government agent, dealing with various cases throughout the Wild West.

This story is a treasure hunt with a side of conspiracy thriller, taking place in Arizona, where O’Connor’s latest assignment is to track down a mysterious cannon associated with Mexican general Santa Anna dating back to the Napoleonic Wars, which is said to have fallen into the hands of the local Comanche tribe, which may have a secret purpose which makes him suspicious of the motives of those who sent him to retrieve it, even as he deals with hostile natives and renegade white settlers while on its trail.
