The story stars a rancher, whose land were set on fire by a stray locomotive spark which the railway company won’t compensation for, fighting to clear his name after finding himself framed by the company head for railway-related robbery and murder.

[Free eBook] The Golden Amazon’s Triumph by John Russell Fearn [Vintage Science Fiction]

The Golden Amazon’s Triumph by the late British author John Russell Fearn is the 3rd novel in his long-running Golden Amazon series of vintage science fiction adventures, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This was originally published in 1953 by World’s Work as part of their The Master Science Fiction Series line. The series, which had its origins in pulp novelettes released under the pseudonym Thornton Ayre, was very popular during the 1950s and 60s and ran to 21 original novels which were serialized in The Toronto Star Weekly and several posthumous ones as well, stars a scientifically-created superwoman with a greatly enhanced intellect and physical abilities, who was initially morally ambiguous.

This story finds her commissioned to figure out who is spying upon the dealings of an interplanetary shipping company, and uncovering the lingering scheme of an embittered former V-rocket scientist who has apparently laid a terrible revenge plan using the capabilities of his invention.

The story is centred around various conflicts as a small town is taken over by a murderous man who seizes a newly-discovered gold mine by offing the owner, and recruits local labour with the help of assorted ne’erdowells and his reluctant stepson, who of course decides to betray him for the beautiful daughter of an opposing rancher, only to find that his evil stepfather’s control may be harder to overturn.

This was originally published in 1947 by Stanley Paul using the pseudonym Hugo Blayn. The plot of the story is a precursor to such suspense/crime thrillers such as Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film Dial M For Murder, and is the tale of a man planning to commit “the perfect crime” of ridding himself of his fiancée, with the unwitting aid of a Scotland Yard friend, whose budding suspicions may not come soon enough to stop him in time.

The story centres around a resource dispute between landowners, starring a wandering mining engineer who finds a night’s shelter with an old rancher (with the requisite beautiful daughter) whose property is suffering from a lack of water supply, apparently the work of a ruthless neighbour, whose sabotage the engineer takes it upon himself to remedy, no matter what the cost.

The story is set in Arizona, where an old prospector has found a secret mine full of Aztec gold, which makes his a target for ambitious people who kidnap him to reveal its location, even as a saloon singer friend grown suspicious of his sudden disappearance tries to mount a rescue squad.
