The novel is set in 17th century Spain, based on the eventful life of John of Austria the Younger, an illegitimate son of Philip IV of Spain, as he engages in rivalries with his half-brothers over the attentions of a lady, only to be split apart by machinations and religious wars as Spain engages in conflicts with other countries and the royal family begins to distrust his ambitions.

The story is set in England during the reign of James I and is centred around the seemingly impossible love between a courtier’s daughter from the gentry and a mere farmer’s son, as they get caught up in the intrigues of the troubled times.

The Soldier from Virginia by the late English author Marjorie Bowen, a prolific multi-genre novelist who wrote under many other pseudonyms during the early mid-20th century and had several works adapted to film, is a standalone historical biographical novel novel, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press.

This was originally published in 1915 by Methuen under the title Mr Washington and was re-released in a revised edition in 1925 by Thomas Nelson with a new preface by the author (this version here), and has been reprinted throughout the decades until as late as the 1970s.

The story focuses on the early life of US nation founder George Washington, breaking away from the apparently then-standard (circa the 1910s) pop-culture portrayal of him as a formal and stiff personality, instead depicting him in his youth as charming, ardent, and purposeful, with a career full of adventure and excitement.

This was originally published in 1937 by Collins using the pseudonym George R. Preedy.

This vintage biography examines the unorthodox personal life and formative influences of the 18th century British author Mary Wollstonecraft, who in addition to being the mother of Mary Shelley of Frankenstein fame, was a pioneering writer in her own right and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Women, one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy, in addition to a number of other literary works also briefly covered in this.

This was originally published in 1939 by William Heinemann Ltd, and there’s a retrospective article about Bowen and her works as part of The Independent’s “Forgotten Authors” series, if you’re interested.

This autobiography details her early life spent in poverty and troubled family relationships as well as her attempts at self-education, and subsequent writing influences and career decisions.
