The series takes places in a reimagined druidic Robin Hood analogue of Merrie Olde England circa the 12th century, where the new Church clashes with the old pagan gods. This story sets up the future adventures of peasant siblings Rob and Marion, who will become champions of the old religion, of whom brother Rob is prophesied to become the sworn enemy of a devout nobleman’s son of the new religion who will battle him for an important avatar of the titular “greenwode”, but who instead tries to circumvent said prophecy by making love, not war, a tactic that may not work nearly as well as he hopes.

Sunset Island by Elliot Mackle, a former US Air Force captain turned journalist and novelist, is the 3rd novel in his Caloosa Club Mysteries series of historical investigative mystery with m/m romantic elements, free for a limited time courtesy of LGBT specialty publisher Lethe Press.

This is the series for which the author was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award for the 1st novel, and won the International Rainbow Award for the second in the Best Gay Mystery/Thriller category. The series is set in 1950s Florida, specifically dealing with post-WWII fallout military/civilian societal fallout issues and assorted war-related crimes, starring an ex-Navy officer turned hotelier of the aforementioned club and an ex-Marine turned county detective. This installment continuing their investigative adventures, apparently featuring several sets of cases rather than focusing on a single overarching crime.

This series apparently consists of standalone stories where the shared premise is that two long-term male friends—the dynamic consisting of a gay man with a long-term crush on a friend he’d previously thought to be exclusively straight—establish a friends-to-lovers relationship in the aftermath of some pivotal event. This one involves a family emergency, which leads to a brief emotional hookup after a particularly stressful day, which one friend is reluctant to write off as a mere one-night comfort stand, even though he is worried that there’s no real romantic future in continuing their increasingly steamy encounters.
