[Free eBook] The Dark Destroyer by John Glasby [Supernatural Mystery Horror]

The Dark Destroyer by the late British author John Glasby is his standalone supernatural horror novel with investigative mystery elements, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This was originally posthumously published in 2007 by Linford’s Linford Mystery Library line, and is said to include minor links to H. P. Lovecraft’s popular extended Cthulhu Mythos, to which the late author contributed a number of tales.

The story deals with uncovering the mystery surrounding the obligatory ancient awakening evil stalking some quaint village, with possible ties to an extinct old family with rumoured unsavoury practices, the source of which the locals must figure out before it’s too late.

[Free eBook] The Coming of Cthugha by John Glasby [Lovecraftian Sci-Fi Mystery Horror]

The Coming of Cthugha by the late British author John Glasby is the 1st novel in his Dark Armageddon trilogy of Lovecraftian science fiction horror thrillers, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This is one of their original publications, selected posthumously from the author’s extensive literary estate. The setting is based directly upon the extended Cthulhu mythos originated by the late H. P. Lovecraft, and the title character of Cthugha created by August Derleth sports a quote from one of Glasby’s own pulp fiction stories on its Wikipedia page.

The trilogy combines science fiction and horror with mystery and conspiracy thriller elements, as individuals are recruited into a plucky secret Organisation of intellectuals trying to prevent the stars coming right and unleashing eldritch abominations from the furthest depths of space and time upon the Earth. This story shows the recruitment of one such individual, a nephew looking into his uncle’s disappearance and unraveling the trail of clues sparked by examining an odd manuscript.

[Free eBook] Stone Cold by Simon Clark [Sci-Fi Paranormal Horror]

Stone Cold by English author Simon Clark, a recipient of multiple British Fantasy Awards, is his standalone paranormal sci-fi horror novella, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This was originally published in 2008 by Tasmanic Publications under the title Stone Cold Calling, was nominated for a BFA 2009 Best Novella and may have been later revised by the author, with a more recent copyright date of 2013 in the frontmatter.

The story takes place in the contemporary US, where a group of fortune-seeking meteorite hunters are making plans to collect one which landed during the 1940s before the area becomes flooded due to development, only to discover that the otherworldly stone harbours an ancient evil.

The story stars a young girl nicknamed “Button”, who is haunted by odd dreams, and possesses a secret “real” name which somehow leads mysterious men to murder her family while in search of her, prompting a desperate escape to find uneasy shelter with an out-of-state uncle, whose neighbour who claims he can help her figure out what’s going on.

Nicor! by British author Peter Tremayne, perhaps best known as the author of the popular Sister Fidelma historical mystery series, is his standalone monster horror thriller with murder mystery elements, free again for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This was originally published in 1987 by Sphere. The story takes place on an oil rig in the Carribean, which in addition to experiencing a series of murders under investigation, also finds itself under attack from a possibly demonic sea monster they have awakened by drilling too far into the depths.

The Doom that Came to Dunwich: Selected Stories of Lovecraftian Mystery by Richard A. Lupoff, a recipient of a 1963 Hugo for a co-edited fanzine and acknowledged expert on the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, is a themed collection of his sfnal mystery/horror shorts, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This collection contains stories in homage to the works of the late H. P. Lovecraft, especially involving his popular Cthulhu Mythos, with a new introduction to author Lupoff and his works by fellow science fiction author Philip Harbottle.

The title story was originally published as a bonus in a previous collection of the author’s in 1996 and later picked up for inclusion in the Return to Lovecraft anthology, and the others were printed in various magazines and anthologies over the decades, from the 1960s to the 2010s.

The story stars a London woman who unexpectedly inherits a Scottish castle from a distant relative, which comes with the obligatory ominous atmosphere and unhelpful locals and mysterious secret which she must uncover. NB: According to one of the customer reviews, this is high on stranger uncovering regional mystery/suspense elements and low on actual creature feature horror, so YMMV.

This trilogy is one of Venture’s original publications, posthumously selected from Glasby’s extensive literary estate, and actually based on the extended Lovecraft mythos, using elements such as Great Old One Cthugha (from August Derleth’s additions; fun fact: the Wikipedia article for Cthugha has a quote from one of Glasby’s vintage pulp stories featuring him) and classic settings such as Miskatonic University.

The trilogy mingles the Cthulhu mythos with conspiracy thriller elements, starring a number of individuals previously recruited into what turned out to be a plucky secret Organisation of intellectuals trying to keep the stars from coming right and allowing the invasion of unthinkable horrors from deep space. This installment wraps up the tale of their desperate efforts traveling throughout time and space to prevent the worst from befalling the Earth.
