This was originally published in 1962 by Brown Watson Ltd using the pseudonym Alan Holmes and was later reprinted by Sabre as part of their Sabre Westerns line.

The story stars a man who inherits a large horse ranch in Nevada, and finds that extensive land ownership carries certain troubles as a deadly determined developer seeks to build a nearby dam, which apparently they combat by triggering a fake goldrush to steal attention and workers away, which in turn leads to a potentially fatal escalation of hostilities.

Strange Company by the late Cherokee author Robert J. Conley, a recipient of multiple literary as well as genre awards including the Golden Spur and the WWA’s Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Contribution, is his western historical action adventure novel, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Pioneering imprint.

This was originally published in 1991 by Pocket Books and incorporates some real history into it (more than usual for the genre, at least), with a brief introductory author’s note about certain historical figures who make an appearance.

The story is set during the US Civil War, starring a man of half-Cherokee descent and his soon-to-be friend (their adventures continue in a sequel novel, Borderline, which has previously been offered free), who apparently meet up on opposite sides of the US Civil War and find common cause against a sadistic Confederate captain who captures and torments them both.
