[Free eBook] Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys [Lovecraftian Alternate Historical Fantasy with Spy Mystery]

Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys is the 1st novel in her The Innsmouth Legacy series of alternate historical dark fantasy with strong horror, mystery, and espionage thriller elements, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Tor Books.

This is a special time-limited promotion, being made free to boost the upcoming 2nd novel, and this edition includes a bonus short story. The series is set in the late H. P. Lovecraft’s popular Cthulhu Mythos, varying it as an alternate hidden history where during the 1920s, the U.S. government secretly rounded up the population of the seaside village of Innsmouth, long since hybridized with the mystical Deep Ones of the oceans, into desert internment camps.

This story takes place a generation later during the late 1940s as the Cold War is getting underway, when an FBI agent believing that Communists spies have stolen dangerous magical secrets from the legendary Miskatonic University, calls upon one of the few survivors of the camps for help, who must return to her ruined home and uncover the remaining scraps of her suppressed personal and ancestral history to face the threat.

Offered DRM-free through 12 PM EST on October 20th, available worldwide, directly from the publisher.

[Free eBook] The Coming of Cthugha by John Glasby [Lovecraftian Sci-Fi Mystery Horror]

The Coming of Cthugha by the late British author John Glasby is the 1st novel in his Dark Armageddon trilogy of Lovecraftian science fiction horror thrillers, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.

This is one of their original publications, selected posthumously from the author’s extensive literary estate. The setting is based directly upon the extended Cthulhu mythos originated by the late H. P. Lovecraft, and the title character of Cthugha created by August Derleth sports a quote from one of Glasby’s own pulp fiction stories on its Wikipedia page.

The trilogy combines science fiction and horror with mystery and conspiracy thriller elements, as individuals are recruited into a plucky secret Organisation of intellectuals trying to prevent the stars coming right and unleashing eldritch abominations from the furthest depths of space and time upon the Earth. This story shows the recruitment of one such individual, a nephew looking into his uncle’s disappearance and unraveling the trail of clues sparked by examining an odd manuscript.

The story stars a London woman who unexpectedly inherits a Scottish castle from a distant relative, which comes with the obligatory ominous atmosphere and unhelpful locals and mysterious secret which she must uncover. [Free eBook] ChiZine 150th Canada Day Giveaway [Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Poetry]

In celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, for today only on Canada Day, Canadian small press specialty publisher ChiZine Publications is holding a giveaway of all their ebooks from their Canadian authors for free (modest pay-what-you-want donation suggested).

Their catalogue includes many award-nominated and -winning genre authors, both local and international. Although the bulk of it is tilted towards horror, there’s also a generous selection of fantasy, science fiction, paranormal mystery, and even some sfnal literary fiction and poetry in the lot. Overall, the selection is quite high quality (and you shouldn’t miss picking up the offered Imaginarium anthology volumes of yearly best-of feature short stories) and anything you pick up will likely be pretty decent (click on the covers to go to the descriptions of the books). Some of the download filesizes are very large, so be warned.

I especially recommend out of the authors I’ve previously bought: Quebec author Claude Lalumière (excellent multi-genre short stories), Caitlin Sweet (some traditionally epic fantasy, some mythologically-based), Gemma Files (steampunk magical western with LGBT elements, also horror shorts), Nancy Baker (dark fantasy with legendary creatures), Geoff Ryman (Hugo nominee for science fiction, but he has a fantasy novel in this), Quebec author Yves Meynard (Aurora Award-winner with quite good multi-genre short stories).

Offered DRM-free worldwide through July 1st, 2017 until midnight Eastern Time, directly at the publisher’s special promo page and you can read more about it at the announcement on their blog.
