Astounding by Kim Fielding is a standalone m/m contemporary science fiction romance novel, free for a limited time courtesy of LGBT specialty publisher Dreamspinner Press.
The story is an homage to old school science fiction publishing and genre conventions (the main characters are apparently named from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic Martian Barsoom series, among other sfnal references), starring the editor of a struggling speculative fiction magazine who rejects a story submission from an author claiming to be a stranded alien, and gets to know him through his genre writing attempts as they embark upon a road trip that changes everything.
Offered worldwide through May 27th until midnight Eastern Time, available DRM-free directly from the publisher.
Free for a limited time @ the publisher’s webstore (DRM-free ePub/mobi/PDF bundle available worldwide; requires account signup with valid email and billing address, but no payment info)
If you enjoy this and would like to read more, the author offers some additional tie-in stories to this novel, available as free reads on her website, and you can pick up more of her work during Dreamspinner’s 30% off Celebrate Community sale through the end of May.
Carter Evans is founder and editor-in-chief of Astounding!—a formerly popular spec fiction magazine currently in its death throes. Not only can he do nothing to save it, but stuck in a rathole apartment with few interpersonal connections, he can’t seem to do much to rescue his future either. And certainly all the booze isn’t helping. He snaps when he receives yet another terrible story submission from the mysterious writer J. Harper—and in a drunken haze, Carter sends Harper a rejection letter he soon regrets.
J. Harper turns out to be John Harper, a sweet man who resembles a ’50s movie star and claims to be an extraterrestrial. Despite John’s delusions, Carter’s apology quickly turns into something more as the two lonely men find a powerful connection. Inexplicably drawn to John, Carter invites him along on a road trip. But as they travel, Carter is in for some big surprises, some major heartbreak… and just maybe the promise of a good future after all.
