Phantoms on the Wind by Robert E. Vardeman, a 1972 Hugo Award finalist for Best Fan Writer, in addition to being an author in his own right, is the 2nd novel in his The Demon Crown trilogy of epic adventure quest fantasy, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press’ Venture imprint.
This was originally published in 1989 by Tor. The trilogy is set in the usual sort of fantasy land where the troubled realm has a lost heir who needs to be found restored to the throne with the aid of a dangerous magical artifact via an epic quest.
This installment deals with the aftermath of one such successful previous restoration quest, whose rightful heir has now fallen prey to the corruption of the artifact and has become a paranoid tyrant, kicking off a new quest for the backup spare heir, who is now the only remaining hope for the kingdom wracked by civil war.
